Month-end Run - Saturday 23 September 2006 HERMANUS WHALES'N'WHEELS SHOW

Reportback by Tim Cruise

We had an early start to get to Hermanus, meeting at 6.45am for a 7am departure. I can only assume that the early start put people off, as we only had three Triumphs turn up…!!!

It was a beautiful day, and we enjoyed a lovely (and uneventful!) drive to Hermanus. We got to the Primary School at around 8.15am to discover that the Early Ford club had taken over our display spaces - but all was fine in the end, as we were placed instead next to the Austin Healeys, which in my opinion was a much nicer (and more logical!) place to be!

There were about 100 cars in all, with strong showings from the Early Ford and Crankhandle clubs. We ended up with 5 Triumphs on display, as Nick and Denise Joubert arrived (from Struisbaai nogal - Cape Town members take note!!!) in his (almost complete) restored TR3, and about-to-be new members Darryl and Carol Mance trailered in his newly restored Spitfire Mk2 (Cape Town members take note again…!). There were even 13 Cobra's there, and they don't even have a club yet!

I took along some regalia samples, almost as an afterthought, and was very glad I did - we sold quite a few regalia items, to both club- and non-club members! A Mr. Mace came along and gave us a pair of original TR3 lapel pins, keyrings and a letter dated 5 December 1956 welcoming him to the Triumph Sports Owners Association as a new owner of a Triumph TR3, commission number TS12132! Unfortunately I was elsewhere on the grounds at the time, so I do not know what has happened to this car - maybe someone can shed some light on this?

We eventually left at around 3pm,having spent a most pleasant day in the company of fellow classic car enthusiasts. My thanks go to the Camerons (Neil, Sean, William and Genevieve), Theo Brand & Gideon Snyman, Nick and Denise Joubert, and Darryl and Carol Mance for making the effort to come along and be part of this special day!
