Month End Run: Sunday 23rd October
MG Economy Run

Well, round one had to go to the MG's, they had more cars there than we did (12 vs 10). I was more than a bit disappointed not to see MG's Frank Peche there. Frank was a prime initiator in ensuring that these two great Clubs got together on a joint outing so, Frank, if you are reading this, a big thank you from the TSCC.

Back to the story; and so it came to pass that on a beautiful spring morning 22 classic sports cars set out on the 1st MG/ Triumph invitational economy run, an excellent through the country run of 263km, starting at the Swartland One Stop on the N7, past Malmesbury to Piketberg, through Porterville and Gouda, on to Worcester for lunch before going over Bains Kloof and stopping at the Winelands One Stop on the N1 to re-fuel. Quite a run. We ran in Nerina's Spitfire, convinced that we could be competitive. After 40 minutes of dawdling along at 45mph, and passing nearly everybody into the bargain, I had time to think. If you only ever had one last tank full of petrol, how would you drive your car? Slowly, in order to eke out every last ounce of economy, at the expense of driving enjoyment, or would you take the car out on one last power drive? For me, with over 220km of the run still to go, the answer was obvious, goodbye everybody, meet you at the lunch stop.

Lunch was held at the Mill and Oak near Worcester and consisted of a set menu. Unfortunately as I am still having teething problems the spare ribs on offer did not have too much appeal and after apologising to our MG hosts Nerina and I carried on in search of softer fare. The run ended at the Wine lands One Stop on the N1 where the cars were re-filled and the fuel consumption recorded. The full results are published below and the anoraks can spend the rest of their lives analysing the data and drawing all sorts of incorrect conclusions. Finally, a huge "thank you" to our hosts for inviting us on this run and in particular a special word of thanks to James Reinhart for organising an exceptionally enjoyable outing.

PS: Memo to the TSCC technical boffins: The Winelands One stop on the N1 sells THE most divine waffles.
