Hermanus Whales & Wheels Show
23rd to 26th September

Seems the inclement Saturday weather unnecessarily put a few people off making the trip to Hermanus for the whales and wheels show. Pity really, 'cause the weather in Hermanus was superb. Nerina and I left half an hour before the convoy and had a terrific, traffic free run, and so did the convoy as it later transpired. On arrival we parked at the designated site (a local school's rugby field) and set up home for the day. Given the conditions we were happy to have 9 Triumphs in attendance made up of the Devin, Gian and Gerda in the 3A, Gerhard's TR7 v8, Neil and Colleen in a TR7, two TR5's, occupied by Peter and Monica in one with Neil and Genevieve in the other, Geoff Davis flew solo in a TR4A, and two TR6's belonging to new members Mike and Sue Schilperoord and Mike Jakabowski. Great to see new members getting stuck in early! Bob Mellvill was also there as a spectator in his plastic, the 3A suffering from electrical maladies. Notice from this list the complete absence of any Spitfires? Sad isn't it, especially when one considers that Spitfires at one time were the backbone of events of this nature.

Nice thing about this show is that Hermanus offers plenty in the way of attractions, be it watching the whales (all 4 of them as far as we could see) or any of the many and varied festive activities taking place in the town. At the end of the day prizes were awarded in various categories and Triumph scooped two of these. Peter du Sautoy was placed 2nd in the most desirable convertible on show for his TR5, and the TSCC was awarded 1st prize for best display stand. I think the Club has to acknowledge Geoff Davis in this regard for conceptualising and creating the very informative and interesting display boards which, probably more than the cars themselves, puts our stand a cut above the rest. And while we are handing out plaudits, I think that Gerhard also deserves a round of applause for getting the ENTIRE Vorster family to support this event, wife, Mother and Father in law, brother and sister in laws, son and two daughters. Quite an achievement, but not yet worthy of applause. How on earth though did he get his two daughters aanhangsels (AKA boyfriends) to not only attend but also earn their keep by erecting and later dismantling the display boards? Something I might add that just about requires a degree in civil engineering! God those boys must love his daughters. You can applaud now.

Peter Du Sautoy's immaculate TR5 won the prize for the best convertible of the show.

In all there was 9 Triumphs that participated, with two new members in their TR6s: Mike and Sue Schilpherpoort in their red TR6, and Mike Jakubowski with his BRG TR6.
Our club won the trophy for the best club display:

Real fun day!!
