Weekend Away in Knysna
6th-9th August

Report by Sheila Maggs

In the end we had only 10 participants, being Chris and Marian, Dave and Ann, Tim,Eileen and their son Jonathan, Des, Brian and I. Chris and Marian had an early start, and Dave and Ann travelled up in their own time.

Our trip up started pretty well with Tim and Eileen and their son Jonathan and Des meeting in Gordon's Bay, where Jonathan was leaving his car to travel up with Des. We were rather surprised when Des arrived in his Skyline, whether he had a premonition or not, this turned out to be a real blessing in disguise. Reason - we only made it to just before Caledon when the TR7 overheated and blew the cylinder head gasket. We managed to drive it through to Caledon Hotel where it stayed for the weekend and we loaded our baggage and ourselves into the Skyline to continue our journey. Thank you Des, what would we do without you.

We wre very fortunate in that although Cape Town was flooded, we had no rain to talk about in Knysna. Unfortunately, the only Triumph at Knysna was Tim Cruise's GT6. Perhaps Brian should take note?? The first night we all went through to the Heads for dinner, which was most enjoyable. Saturday we did our own thing and in the evening we had a communal braai, but as it was rather chilly, we all ate in our flat and generally chatted and had coffee. Sunday, we once again went our own way with Chris and Marian going as far as Storms River. Des, Brian and I went through to the waterfront and then later took a drive up to Coney Glen above the Heads, where they have some viewpoints giving spectacular views of the entrance to the Heads as well as the open sea. As we all reached base camp at various times, no arrangements were made for the evening which was spent preparing for the trip home next day.

Now of course we had to get the TR7 home to Gordon's Bay and once again, after considering various ways and means of doing this, our "fairy godfather" (some fairy!!!) in the form of Mike, came to our rescue and he and Brian went through to Caledon and trailered the car back. Mike is always there for everyone. Thanks again Mike. Happy to say that the car is repaired and back on the road so all's well that ends well.

Thank you for a good report, next time a bit less of the "fairy" please!! Godfather has a strong Italian/ Mafia connotation, which is OK. But fairy?? Ed.
