CHAPMANS PEAK OPENING
Saturday 20th DecemberSome of you may have noticed this event in newspapers or may have even attended. A day long programme of events to commemorate the re-opening of this prime tourist attraction after 4 years of repairs.
Our main area of interest was the opening parade formed by classic cars from the Crankhandle, MG and Triumph car clubs. Peter du Sautoy had been negotiating our involvement for months but it was only a few days before the event that we were advised it would happen. By then we had "closed" for the year and could not make it an official event. Peter, in his usual persistent manner, offered to phone members inviting them to take part. This arduous task was reduced by only phoning members likely to accept based on previous attendance.
We all met at the Noordhoek farmstall centre, and literally filled the place with cars. The pre-convoy activities and atmosphere were magic and it was simply good to be there.
About 35 M.G.'s, 35 Crankhandle cars and 4 TR6's, 3 sidescreens, 1 TR7, 1 TR4A, 2 TR5's and 1 spitfire made up a very impressive convoy that did a slow return parade along the Drive back to Noordhoek. This was the best M.G. turnout I have ever seen and ours could have been better given more than 3 days notice.
