Killarney Race Day - 11th Aug 2002
Despite the forecast of rain, the day dawned bright and clear and stayed that way until the wind came up in the early aftemoon. A perfect day for some fast driving with over 30 Alfas and alas, only 7 Triumphs. The two Ferraris and Pantera GT probably all achieving twice our speeds were quite intimidating and one gets butterflies as seat belts are tightened, helmets donned and gloves stretched on. As you wait in the access lane for the green light to project you into the racing stream, you wonder why you're doing this!. It would be far less nerve wracking staying at home reading the newspaper like the other sensible Triumph members. But once on the track on that other side of the pit wall, all is forgotten, no more butterflies, and you get carried away by the thrill of it all.
Once warmed up, we couldn't get Gordon Waring off the track and we understand the Minardi Team has signed him up. Despite Neil Cameron's efforts, he couldn't scare Denise Waring in the passenger seat where she seemed very much in control of the situation. Gian Mani, despite having a broken TR3A, was there joining the fun on the track, a modest Paul Mitchell wasn't fooling anyone when he claimed he was taking it easy in his TR6 - his front brakes were almost on fire! Our Racing Team was rounded off with the Napolis with their usual polished performance, the many Frews and yours truly. For such an exciting event, I was surprised at how few members took advantage of the experience for only R125. (In England this would cost the equivalent of R2250).
