Technical Day - 29th March.
Girl in a workshop aka Brian Maggs workshop day: by Jessica Setterberg
I must be honest I was a bit apprehensive about this party. I had no idea of what to expect, what to do, or more importantly, what not to do. I had also forgot to put on my car mechanics outfit; apparently more correctly referred to as an overall, so I was doomed. In expected Jessica tradition we arrived 15 minutes late armed with fresh hot cross buns!
It was great, watching father for the second time Paul Mitchell looking rather confident as he stood proudly under his TR6 with dirty hands; Des Rudolph wielding a wire brush, sander and paintbrush brilliantly, but not at the same time, Chris and Marion, ably assisted by Ronan, arrived with the most amazing workshop toys including an industrial size oil pump - I was thoroughly intimidated! Schui Mani, was as supportive as ever but looked only mildly less bewildered than me. Now I know why the only girls you see in a workshop are on the walls. Getting the Spitfire on the hoist was an experience but all was safe under the expert guidance and encouragement of Brian. Once my car was up there I started getting nervous again. What was I going to see? Do I want everyone else looking? How bad is it? Can I tell? I am proud to say that I learned a lot and it was great fun. With Paul’s help I checked and filled the oil in the differential and the gearbox. Oh yes, well in all honesty I did not bring any oil with me but went down the murky depths of Halt Road and purchased some.Eric and I were due to go to a wedding that afternoon and I was proud to say that not another lady at that wedding could say she had been working on her car with dirty hands that morning. Black tie event is one thing, black fingernail event is quite another. I did ask Brian for his professional opinion of my chassis. He confidently told me that I had a good bottom and it was not too dirty! Not many girls can say that!!
